Yesterday I remembered my dear friend Omar El-Sherif who was born on April 10th. We used to celebrate together and I would sing for him the song by Marilyn Monroe celebrating the birthday of President JF Kennedy and he would sing the same song to me on my birthday. We celebrated together many times in Cairo, including one time at his son’s house which was attended by actress Laila Elwy, Khaled Saleh, Mostafa El-Fiky, and the writer Amal Othman.
On his last birthday, when he was suffering from Alzheimer’s, he told me “I am 8 thousand and 3 thousand years old”. He meant that he was 83 years old.
May God have mercy on you my friend, the great actor Omar El-Sherif.
هذا اليوم يجلني أتذكر صديقي الراحل العظيم عمر الشريف، فقد ولد يوم 10 أبريل وأذكر أننا كنا نحتفل معا بهذا اليوم وكنت أغني له أغنية مارلين مونرو وهي تحتفل بعيد ميلاد الرئيس جون كيندي وكان أيضا يغني لي نفس الأغنية في عيد ميلادي وقد أحتفلت بعيد ميلاده أكثر من مرة في القاهرة ومنها داخل منزل إبنه طارق بالقطامية وحضر الأحتفال ليلي علوي، والفنان خالد صالح ومصطفي الفقي ولبلبة والكاتبة آمال عثمان.
وفي أخر عيد ميلاد أقمته له قال ل وهو يعاني من مرض الألزهايمر “أنا عندي دلوقتي 8 آلاف و3 آلاف سنة” وكان يعني أنه وصل إلى عمر 83 سنة.
