Painting from the tomb of King Horemheb, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty – King’s Valley 57, Western Thebes, Valley of the Kings – The decoration of the tomb of Horemheb, last king of the 18th Dynasty, presents a number of innovations. First, a new text, the Book of Gates, was introduced. Second, the scenes and texts were carved first, then painted. This wall depicting scenes from the Book of Gates was never completed, so the steps followed by the artists are clear: images were first sketched in black, then corrected by the master artisan in red.
