Sarcophagus of King Merenptah, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty – King’s Valley 8, Western Thebes, Valley of the Kings – The outer sarcophagus of Merenptah presents on his cartouche-shaped lid a sculpted figure of the king surrounded by the protective Mehen serpent and covered with texts and figures of king and gods. This outer sarcophagus still lies in his tomb, while the inner stone one was taken by the priests of the 21st Dynasty and re-used for Psusennes I in his burial at Tanis.
