Castanets, from the Funerary Equipment of Tutankhamun – New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty – From Western Thebes, Valley of the Kings, Tomb 62 – (Carter 620/13), Cairo, Egyptian Museum – Many musical instruments were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. This pair of castanets was made of ivory in the shape of human arms wearing bracelets. The inscription gives the names of Queen Tiye and Princess Meritaten, who was the sister of Tutankhamun’s wife. The castanets represented a very popular musical instrument in ancient Egypt.
