Kohl holder – New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty – From Western Thebes – Cairo, Egyptian Museum – This detail shows the top part of the kohl holder from the New Kingdom, which was found in 1897. It was designed to keep kohl, a substance that was used to decorate and protect the eyes. The container has the shape of a palm column consisting of nine palm stems. It is made of glass with decorative elements and was formed around a clay core which was removed after the glass cooled.
