Zahi Hawass has launched an international petition to save the statue of Sekhemka, a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art sold by the Northampton Borough Council to an unknown buyer at an auction at Christie’s in London.

Trading in antiquities is a cultural crime. It is an unforgivable act that should never be committed by a reputable cultural institution.
